The story that you’re about to read is from the Daily Mirror & Mundo Deportivo, so it’s advisable to keep a jar of salt nearby. The number of grains of salt that will be needed depends on personal preference, but we would suggest you not to be stingy on this matter.
Since moving to Real Madrid, Luka Jović has failed to show the quality and panache that were synonymous with him at Eintracht Frankfurt and made him one of the most highly coveted transfer targets of last summer.
While there may be some internal reason for his constant omission from the starting XI — Zinedine Zidane’s love and apparent favoritism for Karim Benzema certainly doesn’t help — Jović has only scored 2 goals and provided 1 assist in 770 minutes of action. Those are abysmal numbers for a player who had 27 goals and 7 assists in 3302 minutes last season.
However, the surprising lack of game-time and lack of goals are not even the lowest points of his Los Blancos tenure.
Two days ago, Jović left quarantine in Madrid to go home to Serbia (for which he had permission) but then went out and partied in Belgrade (for which he didn’t). The party may have been on the occasion of his girlfriend’s birthday, but it was still a serious mistake, especially as Serbia are under increasingly strict protocols (including an impending curfew) due to COVID-19. Jovic has already apologized. Mistakes do happen and they are forgivable (right, Mason?), but the scapegoating-media as well as leading government officials in Serbia are having none of it.
And there are now rumors that this gives Real the perfect excuse and chance to offload Jović in the summer.
The rumor mill loves to pour gasoline on fires, and the Daily Mirror are now running a story that the 22-year-old will be offered to Chelsea as well as Tottenham on loan in the summer. Mundo Deportivo are also running a story along similar lines, and they have mentioned Zidane’s disappointment with the striker, and added Napoli and AC Milan into the mix. There are no further details in either of the stories, but future speculation will surely fill in those gaps.
Regardless of his struggles this season, Luka Jović is still a world-class footballer — we here at WAGNH are certainly big fans. If he were actually available, Chelsea could do worse than getting him in on a Kovačić-esque deal from Real. But whether he is actually available is less certain. I’m certainly not getting my hopes up.
We had Luka Jovic as the best young forward likely to be available. We strongly recommended him to a couple of our customers in the autumn, but hard to say no to Real Madrid.
