HIGHLIGHTS

  • Google released a new update to Android OS earlier this week.
  • New Android update brought Camera app 7.2 to Pixel phones.
  • New camera app brings astrophotography mode to old Pixel phones.

Google launched Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones last month. The two phones featured a host of updates over last year’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. Pixel 4 brought a new Recorder app, Live Captions feature and Screen Attention feature to the Pixel-verse. Pixel 4 also brought an improved Night Sight along with an astrophotography mode to Google’s smartphones. At the time, Google had said that the company would be bringing Pixel 4’s astrophotography mode to older Pixel phones. And now, the company has finally brought the advanced camera mode to its older Pixel phones.

According to a report by Android Authority, the new astrophotography mode is available on older Pixel phones which includes – Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL – as a part of the new Google Camera app version 7.2, which was released along with Android’s November security patch that the tech giant released earlier this week. The feature is available as a part of improvements to the Camera app’s Night Sight mode. This means that if you have a slightly older Pixel phone, you can capture the stars – literally!

Apart from the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a smartphones, Google’s new Camera app also made its way to the second generation Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. The report says that the two phones are getting larger text and pill buttons within the new Camera app. That said, all these updates are available as a part of Android 10 which the Mountain View, California based tech giant rolled out back in September, which means that if you haven’t updated your Pixel smartphone to run on the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system already, you might want to do so now.

Separately, Google will also be rolling out Live Caption feature to its older Pixel phones. This feature would put captions on the videos and podcasts playing on the Pixel smartphones. In addition to that Google has also confirmed that it would be bringing Pixel 4’s Recorder app, which comes with features such as live transcribe and ability to look for specific phrases in an audio recording to the older Pixel phones. However, the company didn’t give a specific timeline for it.
